Students of the preparatory department of the Higher School of International Educational Programs of SPbPU participated in two major academic events held in Kazan at the preparatory faculty for foreign students of Kazan Federal University. Future bachelors and pre-master’s students of the Polytechnic presented at the VI International Olympiad for Foreign Students of Preparatory Faculties, which gathered representatives of 46 universities from more than 60 countries worldwide, and at the V International Scientific and Practical Conference “Exploring the World of Science.”
The intellectual competition was held in two stages. In the first round, the participants demonstrated proficiency in the Russian language, knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and the cultural traditions of Russia. In the second stage, an intellectual game “I Know” was held in specialized disciplines. The participants were undergraduates Bui Nguyen Bao Ngok from Vietnam, Manisa Petross Raimundu from Mozambique, and Zhang Zhuao from China, under the guidance of senior additional education teacher Kseniya Lysiak. As a result of the Olympiad, Zhang Zhuao won the first-degree diploma in the natural science and engineering-technical profile.Bui Nguyen Bao Ngoc became the holder of a second-degree diploma in the humanitarian profile. Manhisa Petrosse Raimund received two awards at once: the nomination “For an expressive performance” in the Russian language and the nomination “For excellent knowledge of mathematics”.
Bui Nguyen Bao Ngoc shared her impressions: I really liked the Olympiad — everything went wonderfully. I am very happy with my victory and the achievements of my fellow students. The trip turned out to be interesting and, I am sure, will be remembered by us for a long time. Thanks to our teachers for their comprehensive support. I would like to especially mention the participants: all the guys are kind and friendly. Despite the fact that we were competing, the atmosphere was very warm.
Parallelly, within the framework of the conference “Opening the World of Science,” master’s and pre-bachelor students of Politechnical presented scientific reports under the guidance of senior additional education teacher Darya Ignatyeva. At the session of the natural science section, Mai Meta from Cambodia presented research on the design of reinforced concrete beams and took first place. Shapata Izake Bazilio Vintala from Mozambique spoke about the analysis of transformer failures in the distribution network of his country, and Karin Bianka Malope from South Africa presented a report “NHLOVISO SOLUTIONS.”
A special interest among the participants was caused by the open lecture in English by Marco Antonio Centurione from Brazil on the topic: “Revealing the mysteries of the birth of supermassive black holes,” based on the latest astrophysical research.
As a result of the conference, the jury highly appreciated the scientific potential of foreign students at SPbPU, and the exchange of experience between young researchers from different countries allowed for the discussion of promising directions in science. Participation in such an event is part of the strategy for the academic adaptation of foreign students to the Russian scientific environment.
