Geneva, June 9 /Sin Hua/ — The Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is spreading rapidly, the number of cases is increasing, the geographic spread is expanding, and cross-border transmission of the infection to Uganda is noted. This was reported on Monday by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Currently, WHO assesses the risk for DR Congo as very high, for Uganda and neighboring countries bordering the affected areas as high, and for the rest of the African region and the entire world as low.
As of Sunday, 515 confirmed cases have been registered in the DRC, including 91 with a fatal outcome. Uganda has reported 19 confirmed cases, including two fatal cases and one probable fatal outcome. All cases of illness in Uganda are still epidemiologically linked to the outbreak in the DRC. There is data both on imported cases of infection and on secondary transmission of the infection among contacts and healthcare workers.
National authorities in collaboration with WHO and partners are taking a range of measures to combat the Ebola outbreak. On June 5, African centers for disease control and prevention and WHO presented a joint continental readiness and response plan for the Ebola outbreak. According to the plan, $518 million USD will be allocated to support African countries in preparation, detection, and containment of Ebola outbreaks. –0–
