China Seeks to Expand Extraction of Strategic Minerals from Seawater

Beijing, June 9 /Xinhua/ — The Ministry of Natural Resources of the PRC on Monday published a report highlighting new progress in the use of seawater in the country, as well as emphasizing huge reserves of strategic minerals contained in seawater, and the country’s plans to expand the extraction of such resources through technological progress.

According to the document, China successfully extracted uranium weighing in kilograms from the real ocean environment. Moreover, domestic research institutes, universities, and enterprises have made a breakthrough in the fundamental theory and key technology related to the extraction of lithium, uranium, deuterium, and other microelements.

World uranium reserves in seawater are estimated at approximately 4.5 billion tons, which is more than a thousand times greater than the known reserves on land.

The report notes that the sector of strategic importance for desalination and the integrated use of seawater in China is dynamically developing as an emerging industry.

According to Xian Wensi, director of the Institute of Desalination and Comprehensive Use of Seawater, located in the city of Tianjin / Northern China, there are currently 167 desalination projects in China with a total production capacity of 3.077 million tons per day. The annual volume of seawater used for industrial cooling has reached 193.36 billion tons, which is 86.4% more than in 2020.

He also noted that during the implementation period of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), China will promote the modernization of relevant technologies and equipment and expand technological reserves for extracting strategic elements from seawater. -0-
