On May 30 and 31 at Novosibirsk State University, Chemistry Days were held — an event that brought together schoolchildren, students, teachers, and everyone interested in science. Guests were awaited by a chemistry quiz, popular science lectures, demonstration experiments, a quest, and a “Chemistry Fair.”
According to the event organizerVictoria Chamberlidi, the team has long been eager to bring back this holiday from the hotel:
—Earlier it was held here before COVID and was a kind of faculty tradition. Now we plan to return to what we started with and continue the Days with the name.
The organizers note that the main task was not only to revive the tradition, but also to attract a new audience. To this end, the program was made as diverse and interactive as possible: on the site in front of the main building of NGU there was a “chemical fair,” where participants could try themselves in experiments and contests — for example, draw with invisible ink. The demonstration experiments were accompanied by a theatrical scene about the scientific supervisor and his student.
—We tried to show everyone that the surname can be interesting and captivating,— Victoria said.
One of the most spectacular parts of the program was the demonstration experiments. In particular, the audience was shown how, with strong cooling in liquid nitrogen, a flower becomes brittle.
In addition to experiments, scientific popular lectures were prepared for guests. Employees of the scientific institutes of Akademgorodok talked about biotechnology, atomic force microscopy, and the application of artificial intelligence in chemistry and biology. The speakers paid special attention to modern research and technologies for which Nobel Prizes were awarded.
The startup studio of NGU also spoke at the event. Participants were told about opportunities for students and young researchers: an acceleration program, grants, and support for scientific projects.
The guests of Science Days were schoolchildren interested in natural sciences. One of the participants of the event,Kirill, told that he came to learn more about them:
—Most of all, I probably liked the cyclical reaction because it is very interesting, and in general, with special desire, it can be repeated.
In my opinion, as a student, such events help popularize science and increase interest in the environment around them.
The most anticipated event for the organizers was precisely the demonstration experiments.
—We and the organizer kids prepared for them for a very long time and tried to think through every detail down to the smallest detail. Seeing the result of your efforts in the form of a crowd of people, watching the experiments in amazement, was the most touching event of this day,— shared Victoria.
Days with names at the NSU have once again become a place where science has gone beyond the laboratory and turned into a lively and fascinating conversation with the audience.
