Saint Petersburg, June 8 /Xinhua/ — China is a maritime power and actively participates in an international project on the restoration of the marine ecological environment. This was stated in an interview with Xinhua on the eve of World Oceans Day by Igor Myasnikov, Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation of the Russian State Hydrometeorological University /RSHMU/.
According to him, an example of cooperation between Russian and Chinese oceanologists was the implementation in 2021-2023 of the project “Comprehensive Satellite Observation and Modeling of Ocean-Typhoon Interaction” based at the Laboratory of Satellite Oceanography of the RGGMU and Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology. “In addition, Russian and Chinese experts interact on climate change issues within the framework of the Global Campus of the World Meteorological Organization and other organizations,” the expert noted.
Another promising area of joint research, according to I. Myasnikov, is the study of pollution of the World Ocean. “Currently, the issue of cooperation between RGGMU and Harbin Polytechnic University in the field of plastic pollution of the World Ocean is being worked out. Plastic pollution has become one of the global problems of modern times, as trash does not respect borders between countries and can be transported by currents and winds to the most inaccessible regions of the planet, including the Arctic and the eastern seas,” he said.
An important contribution of the CIS to international cooperation in the field of marine ecology was the publication in 2024 of the White Paper titled “State of the Marine Ecological Environment in China,” which reflected the country’s understanding of environmental conservation efforts and the development of international cooperation in this area, noted I.
