Gaza, June 7 /Sinhuan/ — The Palestinian movement HAMAS announced on Saturday the start of meetings in the Egyptian capital Cairo with Palestinian groups and intermediaries to discuss the implementation of an agreement on a ceasefire and the future of the Gaza Strip.
The HAMAS representative Hazem Qassem told journalists that the meetings are aimed at completing what was agreed upon in the first phase, including halting “Israeli aggression and escalation, killings, opening of checkpoints, and ensuring the admission of the National Committee.”
According to him, further discussions will be aimed at finding reasonable and acceptable compromises for all parties at the second stage, regardless of whether it includes the introduction of international forces or the Gaza technocratic committee into the enclave, or the solution of the issue regarding Palestinian weapons.
H. Kasem emphasized that HAMAS places the interests of the Palestinian people first and seeks to “deprive Israel of any pretexts to renew the war against the Gaza Strip.”
A HAMAS delegation headed by the movement’s leader in the Gaza Strip, Khalil al-Hayya, and representatives of other groups arrived in Cairo on Friday to participate in multi-day negotiations.
These events occur against the backdrop of the collapse of the fragile ceasefire between HAMAS and Israel, concluded in October 2025. Moreover, key provisions of the ceasefire, including disarmament and restoration, have not yet been fulfilled.
The first stage of the ceasefire included the exchange of prisoners and detainees, the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from certain areas.
In mid-January, the United States announced the start of the second phase of the ceasefire, which involves the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops, the disarmament of Hamas, the restoration and creation of a single governing body in the Gaza Strip. –0–
