Kinshasa, June 6 /Xin Hua/ — The number of confirmed cases of Ebola virus infection in the Democratic Republic of Congo /DRC/ has risen to 452, of which 82 are fatal. This is stated in the latest report published by the country’s Ministry of Health.
It is reported that on June 4, in the Ituri province and North Kivu, 71 new confirmed cases of illness were registered, 21 of which were fatal. This indicates a rapid and ongoing local transmission of the virus against the backdrop of an outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo strain.
A total of 258 patients are admitted to isolation or inpatient treatment, eight people have recovered.
According to the report, contact tracing remains a serious problem. Out of 4766 contacts under observation in three provinces, only 2755 were examined, which is 57.8%.
The health authorities of the DRC listed the main problems arising in the course of fighting the outbreak. Among them are resistance to taking post-mortem swabs, insufficiently standardized capabilities for Ebola treatment, ineffective contact tracing, lack of basic medicines, shortage of infection prevention means in North Kivu, weak alert systems, as well as a funding deficit amounting to 21.5 million US dollars. –0–
