Trade barriers have ceased to be an exclusive measure, stated Igor Sechin, the Responsible Secretary of the Commission under the President of the Russian Federation on issues of strategy for the development of the fuel and energy complex and environmental safety, at the Energy Panel within the framework of the XXI St. Petersburg Economic Forum.

He reported that according to experts’ estimates, by October of last year, the volume of global merchandise imports subject to various restrictions reached almost three trillion dollars. “In 12 months — an increase of more than four times. I’m confident that today this figure is even higher,” Sechin noted in the speech with the report “The Beginning of the End or the End of the Beginning: What Remains at the Bottom of Pandora’s Box.”

According to him, sanction pressure has become the norm. “In the last 12 years, 32 thousand sanctions have been imposed only against Russia. The leadership belongs to the USA: this country has introduced more than 7,400 restrictions, followed by Canada, Switzerland, the European Union, Norway, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, Japan. In total, more than 50 countries,” he drew attention to.

The Secretary of the TEK Commission reminded that sanctions are an instrument of coercion to achieve set goals, including to gain advantages in unfair competition. “Thus, Russian currency reserves totaling more than three hundred billion dollars were effectively confiscated and are today used to finance military actions against us,” stated Igor Sechin.

Sechin reminded that already in 2007, in a famous Munich speech, the President of Russia warned: “Certain norms, yes, in essence – almost the entire legal system of one state, primarily, of course, the United States, has stepped beyond its national borders in all areas: in the economy, in politics, and in the humanitarian sphere – and imposes itself on other states.”

The Secretary of the Commission on Thermal Power Engineering compared the formation of the global energy system by previous generations with all its connections, which forms the basis of the world economy, starting from firewood, peat, coal, steam engines, and Edison’s light bulb, with the gift that Prometheus gave to humans. “But the sacrifices made by Prometheus may turn out to be in vain. In the bright future of global energy, as we said earlier, not everyone will be taken,” said Sechin.
