One of the most promising new sources of energy is hydrogen storage. This was stated by Igor Sechin, the responsible Secretary of the Commission under the President of the Russian Federation for the Development Strategy of the Fuel and Energy Complex and Environmental Safety, at the Energy Panel of the XXIX St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, in his report “The Beginning of the End or the End of the Beginning: What Is Left at the Bottom of Pandora’s Box?”
“In our assessment, in the long term hydrogen can occupy a significant niche in the global energy balance. One of the most promising directions is hydrogen energy storage, which, unlike lithium-ion systems, has not yet become widespread,” Sechin said.
In his opinion, hydrogen solutions could potentially be used to solve the problem of excess cheap electricity from basic and renewable generation facilities.
Currently, hydrogen technologies are yielding to traditional energy solutions in economic efficiency. Referring to data from the International Energy Agency, Sechin noted that the cost of producing “green” hydrogen in most regions of the world exceeds 200 dollars per barrel of oil equivalent.
Thermonuclear energy remains a long-term goal. Sechin reminded that, despite the potential for practically inexhaustible energy, a stable controlled thermonuclear reaction has not yet been achieved. Nevertheless, investments in this sector are growing — in 2025 they increased by almost 40% to 10 billion dollars.
“To the field of popular science fiction today relate data transmission and energy in space. These projects will have to face countless problems that currently have no scientific or technological solution. Among them are radiation, temperature drops, decompression, commercially unacceptable cost of launching cargo into orbit, energy and data transmission, and much more,” said Igor Sechin.
