Havana, June 6 /Xinhua/ — Cuba on Friday rejected the statement by U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubio that Washington is not blocking oil supplies to the island, referring to the U.S. sanctions imposed on countries supplying oil to Cuba.
According to the post by the head of Cuba’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez, on the social network X, M. Rubio has repeatedly stated that the US government does not block oil supplies to the island.
B. Rodriguez referred to Executive Order 14380, signed by U.S. President Donald Trump on January 29, which establishes punitive tariffs on imports from countries that directly or indirectly supply oil to Cuba.
According to B. Rodriguez, any country that sells oil to Cuba faces the threat of commercial sanctions from the United States.
“Doesn’t this block oil supplies to Cuba?” wrote B. Rodriguez, characterizing this measure as a form of economic pressure on a third country.
This statement by the head of the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs was made in response to remarks by M. Rubio, made on Tuesday at a meeting of the US Senate Committee. The Secretary of State defended the White House position regarding the energy crisis in Cuba.
An island state is significantly dependent on fuel imports to meet domestic demand. According to official data, Cuba inevitably requires about eight fuel shipments per month.
This year the country received only one batch of crude oil — a Russian tanker “Anatoly Kolodkin” delivered about 100 thousand tons of oil.
