In the area of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) of Ukraine, a temporary cessation of fire has come into force, achieved through the mediation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This will allow necessary repairs to the power transmission line to be carried out to maintain nuclear safety.
Under the supervision of IAEA experts, specialists from both sides will begin restoring the power transmission line “Dneprovskaya” with a voltage of 750 kV, damaged as a result of military actions, in the coming days. The territory was thoroughly cleared of mines before the work began.
The line was disconnected more than two months ago. As a result, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe turned out to becompletely dependent on a single 330 kV voltage line. Power supply is necessary for cooling six shutdown reactors at the plant. In recent weeks, ZNPP has lost access to this line several times, forcing staff to start emergency diesel generators.
The IAEA notes that this is already the sixth temporary ceasefire, which the head of the agency Rafael Grossi managed to achieve between Russia and Ukraine since the end of last year in order to ensure the external power supply of the station and maintain nuclear safety.
This time, the preparation of repair work turned out to be especially difficult due to the location of the damaged section — on a high-voltage pole in the area where the line touches the Dnipro River.
According to Grossi, Russia and Ukraine constructively interacted with the IAEA in Vienna for several weeks in complex and delicate negotiations and agreed to cease fire in the interest of ensuring nuclear safety.
“The IAEA will continue to do everything possible to protect people and the environment from the threat of a nuclear accident that will benefit no one and will only exacerbate destruction and suffering caused by the war,” emphasized the head of the agency.
