Vladivostok, June 5 /Xinhua/ — China’s experience is convincing proof that modernization can be successful without copying Western institutions. This was stated in an interview with Xinhua by Olga Migunova, the scientific director of the Center for China and Asia-Pacific Region Studies (ATR) at Saint Petersburg State University of Economics (SPbSEU).
In my opinion, China’s ideas and policies, especially in the new era, still need to become the subject of the most careful study and analysis, first and foremost in Russia, in BRICS countries, and in the developing world. The development model built on the basis of these ideas contains a number of inspiring principles and practical lessons that can be adapted taking into account the national specifics of each country.
“The first and main lesson: the Chinese model proves that a strong state, capable of setting long-term goals and conducting consistent policy, can ensure sustainable growth even in conditions of turbulence. The second important lesson is people-centeredness as the foundation of legitimacy. The third lesson is a pragmatic synthesis of market and plan,” noted O. Migunova.The expert emphasized that at the dawn of reforms, China did not copy the Western neoliberal model, but created a socialist market economy in which market mechanisms serve state goals: technological sovereignty, the establishment of free trade zones, and advanced development.
According to the expert, successful modernization does not require copying Western institutions. Success comes only through one’s own path — built on a strong state, long-term planning, populism, and pragmatic use of market instruments, indicated O. Migunov.
