Saint Petersburg, June 4 /TASS/ — Russia and China share a huge common border, and the principles of relations between the two countries have been formed over centuries. President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin said this on Thursday at a meeting with the heads of leading international news agencies on the sidelines of the 29th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in Saint Petersburg.
“We are neighbors, we have a huge common border. Neighbors are not chosen, this is given by history, that’s how it happened. Over the centuries and years of interaction, a certain system of principles of our relations has developed,” emphasized V. Putin.
“The basic agreement, which underlies the interaction between the two countries, was signed in 2001,” the Russian leader reminded. He noted that this agreement serves as the foundation for today’s achievements, which, according to the President of Russia, “are impressive”: trade turnover amounts to nearly 250 billion US dollars, and a “powerful” diversification is underway.
“China is rapidly and actively developing, occupying an increasingly large niche in the world economy, in world politics, in international affairs as a whole. Of course, we have closely observed this. We didn’t just observe, but worked together, cooperated,” noted V. Putin.
According to him, the basic agreement signed 25 years ago created “good prerequisites and good fundamental conditions for the development of bilateral cooperation in all areas.” –0–
