As a result, traffic on Apakov Passage was changed within the framework of the implementation of the Traffic Management Center (TMC) project by re-marking. At the section opposite building 1, block 3 on Kaluzhskaya Square, a special turning pocket was equipped, and the far left lane for turning onto Leninsky Avenue was lengthened.

“We continue to make movement in the city even faster and more comfortable, as Sergey Sobyanin instructed within the framework of the transport development strategy until 2030. One of the most effective and simple tools for this is re-marking. According to the TsODD project, a special pocket for U-turns was made in Apakov passage, and the length of the left lane for turning from here onto Leninsky Prospekt was also doubled by changing the markings.”As a result, the capacity for turns from Apakova Passage onto Mytnaya Street and Leninsky Prospekt has increased by 15–20 percent, and drivers’ travel time has been reduced by three minutes,” said the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.

Maksim Liksutov

Earlier, drivers leaving Shabolovka Street towards Leninsky Prospekt in the direction of the region had to turn right into Apakova Passage, then drive to the intersection with Mytnaya Street and only there turn around. The detour was 165 meters, and the travel time increased by three minutes. Moreover, such maneuvers interfered with vehicles turning right from Mytnaya Street into Apakova Passage and increased the risk of accidents.

Inconveniences also arose when exiting from Apakov Passage onto Leninsky Prospect towards the region. The section had four lanes, but the far left lane was shorter than the others. Because of this, the right lanes became overloaded while the left lanes remained relatively free. The intersection’s throughput capacity decreased: during one traffic light cycle on Leninsky Prospect, fewer cars turned than possible, and a queue formed on Apakov Passage.

Thanks to the changes, drivers leaving Shabolovka Street for Leninsky Prospekt towards the region no longer need to waste time. They can safely make a U-turn in the pocket and immediately get onto the avenue.

In addition, the length of the leftmost lane for the turn onto Leninsky Prospect was increased from 57 to 114 meters. This allowed for an increase in the throughput capacity of the left turn.

As a result, it was possible to increase the throughput capacity in several directions at once: the left turn from Apakov Passage onto Mytnaya Street and Leninsky Prospect, as well as the right turn from Mytnaya Street onto Apakov Passage. The number of traffic congestions on the adjacent Zhitnaya Street decreased, and the special U-turn pocket made the maneuver toward Leninsky Prospect safe and convenient.
