Beijing, June 2 /Xin Hua/ — A group of Chinese medical experts will leave Beijing early Tuesday morning for the Democratic Republic of Congo to assist local authorities in combating the Ebola outbreak, the State Administration of Health Affairs (SAHA) of the PRC announced on Monday.
The Chinese government has decided to send a team of highly qualified medical experts after the World Health Organization (WHO) stated on May 17 that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is considered an “extraordinary public health situation of international concern.”
Possessing rich experience in epidemic control, experts will work together with the Chinese medical team currently operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and strengthen cooperation with local medical and anti-epidemic institutions to help contain the outbreak of the Ebola virus.
In addition, experts will also conduct training on prevention and treatment for local healthcare institutions, the Chinese medical team, the Chinese embassy, Chinese enterprises, and citizens.
The decision to send a group of experts underscores China’s commitment to international cooperation in combating epidemics, noted the official representative of the WHO China, adding that the team will share experience in fighting epidemics taking into account local conditions and will help strengthen the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s potential in the field of prevention, control, and treatment of Ebola virus disease.
Since the beginning of the recent outbreak, the 24th Chinese medical team, currently stationed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has begun implementing emergency response measures and established a system of prevention and control, including conducting training and drills, coordinating supplies, and improving living conditions for team members. The medical team members are serving on the front lines to protect the health of the local population and Chinese citizens currently residing in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
