The UN General Assembly on Tuesday elected the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, Abdul Rahman, as the chairman of its 81st session, which will begin in September of this year.
As a result of the voting, Raman received 99 votes from member states. The candidate from Cyprus, Andreas Kakouris, secured the support of 91 delegations.
The chairperson leads the work of the UN General Assembly during a one-year session. Currently, the 80th session of the General Assembly is headed by former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

Guterres emphasized that the new Chair will assume officeduring a period of serious global challenges. Among them are armed conflicts, deepening disagreements between states, increasing inequality, and the climate crisis.
The Secretary-General noted that the international community is facing a crisis of trust, while funding for humanitarian aid and sustainable development programs is decreasing, despite record levels of needs.
“However, the intense work in the field of diplomacy, dialogue, and cooperation, which is being conducted day after day within the walls of the General Assembly, gives me new hope that we will be able to turn disagreements into a determination to act jointly for the common good,” he said.
According to Guterres, the Pact is in the name of the future andUN-80 Initiativeoffer a basis for reform and renewal of the Organization.
“Let’s demonstrate solidarity and achieve the unattainable at this defining moment in history of results, which people and the planet need and deserve,” Guterres said.
