June 1, 2026 Culture and Education

Every year on the first day of June, the world celebrates World Parents’ Day – a date that reminds us: behind every happy and successful child are people whose love, hard work, and patience often remain behind the scenes.

Family as the basis of development

The holiday was established by the UN General Assembly in 2012, but the international community has paid increased attention to the role of the family for more than forty years. The UN began systematically raising issues of family support back in the 1980s. In 1994, the International Year of the Family was declared, and earlier still, the International Day of Families was established, which is celebrated on May 15. These initiatives became the foundation for recognizing the family as a key institution influencing the development of society.

Today this idea sounds even clearer: families, parents, caregivers are the first and main protectors of the child. They provide children with emotional stability, safety, care, and the very support without which full personal development is impossible. That is why parental support is increasingly becoming part of national strategies to combat poverty, reduce inequality, and strengthen children’s well-being.

Topic of 2026: “Together – For the Sake of Parents”

This year, UNICEF celebrates World Parents’ Day under the motto “Together – for the sake of parents.” The central event will be the premiere of the video “Becoming a Parent,” in which people from different countries share personal stories – about the joys, difficulties, and unexpectedness of the parenting journey.

The main idea of the video is simple and universal: to give a child a good start in life, those who care about them need time, support, and understanding from society.

Why this is important now

Against the background of rapid social changes, economic challenges, and increasing pressure on families, the role of parents becomes even more significant. The support they receive from governments, employers, and society directly affects how sustainable future generations will be.

The UN emphasizes: strengthening the family is not only a humanitarian mission, but also a strategic task. Investments in parents are investments in the health, education, and well-being of children, and therefore, in the future of the entire world.
