Vienna, May 31 /Xin Hua/ — Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), expressed serious concern on Saturday regarding reports of a drone strike on the machine hall of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP), warning that attacks on nuclear facilities are “like playing with fire.”
MAGATE received information from ZAES that earlier on the same day, a drone hit the machine hall on the station’s territory, resulting in a hole forming in the wall, according to data, says the agency’s publication on the social network X.
“There should be no attacks of any kind, used from nuclear facilities or directed against them,” said R. Grossi, once again calling for restraint so as not to jeopardize nuclear security.
He added that the IAEA team, stationed at the site, requested access to the damaged machine hall to conduct an assessment of the declared damages on site.
According to the agency, the current incident will become the first attack using drones on the territory of the CIS since April 2024.
ZAES, one of the largest nuclear power plants in Europe, has been under Russian control since March 2022. Since the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the IAEA has repeatedly warned about the risks associated with military activity around the facility and has called for the protection of nuclear infrastructure. –0–
