Tianjin/Guangzhou, May 31 /Xin Hua/ — Two Chinese universities on Saturday reaffirmed their commitment to the principle of zero tolerance for academic misconduct, punishing several of their staff members.

In an official notification, Nankai University in the city of Tianjin / Northern China / announced the termination of the employment contract with a postdoctoral researcher due to identified violations in his scientific work. Of the two corresponding authors, one was relieved of his position as director of the Institute of Life Sciences at Nankai University, and the other was issued a warning.

As noted in the university’s statement, a lesson will be drawn from this case for the comprehensive strengthening of education in academic integrity, which will allow preventing violations and creating a clean and honest research environment and academic atmosphere.

In turn, Sun Yat-sen University /Guangdong Province, South China/ dismissed two researchers from their positions – the deputy head of the National Leading Laboratory and the deputy head of the institute – due to the fact that their scientific article revealed signs of academic misconduct. Other involved persons also received punishments ranging from demotion to warnings.

The university statement emphasizes the inevitability of adhering to zero tolerance for academic misconduct and the activation of efforts aimed at ensuring academic integrity and improving the management mechanisms at all stages of research activities, as well as the system of regular monitoring and verification.
