Yerevan, May 29 /Xin Hua/ — “This project has fundamental importance for us. Our strategy today is focused on a significant increase in the share of proprietary content. The new 8th pavilion becomes the main technological foundation for achieving this goal,” said Ruben Shaginyan, head of the Strategic Programs of Armenian Public Television /OTA/, in an interview with Xin Hua.
In the capital of Armenia on Nork hill rises the Yerevan TV tower over 310 meters tall. Not far from it is based OTA, operating since 1956. A Chinese crew is working intensively at the construction site of the new pavilion of the television company. As correspondent Xin Yu reports, the erection of the main structure of the more than 20-meter building has already been completed. On its facade, a bright pattern in the form of a traditional Chinese knot stands out.
“The scale of the TV studio’s territory and its technical capabilities will further allow the implementation of international-scale projects that correspond to international standards and formats. In the long-term perspective, creating such a facility serves to transform the TV channel into a modern media hub of a global level,” stated R. Shaginyan.
In 2023, the governments of China and Armenia signed an agreement on the implementation of the project for constructing a new 8th pavilion of OTA. R. Shaginyan participated as a coordinator in practically all stages: from coordinating the intergovernmental agreement and architectural drawings together with Chinese engineers to solving complex logistical and customs tasks.
“The smoothest stage can be called professional mutual understanding with Chinese colleagues — discipline and accuracy evoke great respect. I am mostly looking forward to the moment when our building opens, and I plan to test it myself. Seeing how the drawings turn into a majestic building is a feeling of immense pride,” he said.
The project, jointly implemented by Chinese companies China Jiangsu International Economic and Technical Cooperation Group and Nanjing Lopu, covers more than 7,100 square meters, with the new studio hall occupying 1,000 square meters. According to R. Shaginyan, the pavilion will allow production volumes of television products to be increased several times over.
“Our Public Television team has gained invaluable experience working with Chinese standards for planning complex objects. The most important opportunity this project gave us is working with volume in space. The huge hall allows achieving cinematographic depth of the image and perspectives, which was impossible to achieve in the old studio,” he said.
25-year-olds Venera Isakanyan and Melina Grigoryan began working as translators on the project in August 2024. What was especially impressive is that the Chinese colleagues are hardworking, punctual, carefully plan their work in advance, and always maintain clear order in business.
“Thanks to this project, I gained very useful experience. Not only has my Chinese significantly improved, but I also became much more confident during conversations. I learned a lot from our Chinese colleague: not only about translation and construction, but also about many other things — for example, Chinese literature, history, and so on,” said V. Isanyan.
M. Grigoryan believes that although Armenia and China are separated by thousands of kilometers, the closeness of the values of the two peoples creates a warm and pleasant atmosphere around the project. According to her, this project became yet another example of friendship between Armenia and China.
“I think this project is very important for Armenia. First of all, because in Armenia this will be one of the largest pavilions, and this will be better for the development of television, and the quality of television programs will significantly improve. This project gives us the opportunity to improve relations between the two countries,” she said.
The head of the project’s construction and technical group, Pan Sun, noted that the facility is currently at the stage of installation of engineering systems. According to him, the new pavilion can be used for various purposes: live news broadcasts, large shows, cultural events, and film shoots. In addition, the architectural appearance of the project combines elements of the traditional Chinese courtyard and Armenian style, which is intended to showcase the beauty of the cultural fusion of the two countries.
“The construction of the new pavilion demonstrates a high level of cooperation between China and Armenia in the cultural and technological sphere. We hope that this project will contribute to the further strengthening of friendly cooperation between the two countries within the framework of the “Belt and Road” initiative,” said Pan Sun.
OTA highly values the importance of this project for Armenia, the telecom company’s management is open to discussing new forms of cooperation, said R. Shaginyan, noting that Armenia and China have great potential for implementation.
“We are sincerely interested in creating joint projects with Chinese partners. The new studio is an ideal platform for cultural exchange and joint production of innovative content. I am confident that such a partnership will be maximally effective and will help our peoples become even closer to each other,” he added.
