Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova congratulated the team of the Dmitry Rogachev Center for Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, and Immunology on the 15th anniversary of its opening, as well as on the 35th anniversary of the establishment of the pediatric hematology service in Russia.
The Vice Prime Minister read out the congratulations from the President of Russia Vladimir Putin. The head of state noted that at the origins of the pediatric hematology service stood prominent scientists, leading doctors, organizers of healthcare, true activists. Thanks to the professionalism, selfless work, and relentless research activities of several generations of brilliant professionals in our country, advanced technologies and methods of prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation have been developed and implemented, and authoritative scientific and clinical schools have been created.
The Dmitry Rogachev Center has undergone a long journey of formation. In 1991, during the most difficult era for the country, under the leadership of Professor Alexander Grigorievich Rumyantsev, the Research Institute of Pediatrics (RIP) of pediatric hematology began its work. At that time, it did not yet have its own clinic and was located on the basis of the Russian Children’s Clinical Hospital. In 2006, on the initiative and with the support of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin, a decision was made to construct a complex of buildings for the center. In 2011, 15 years ago, the Dmitry Rogachev Center admitted its first patient.Today it is the largest scientific and clinical center of a global level in Europe, which has more than 500 beds, almost 2,000 employees, 14 clinical departments, and more than 150 divisions, including the most powerful laboratory complex, a nuclear medicine center, its own cyclotron complex with a laboratory for the synthesis of radiopharmaceuticals.
“Little boy Dmitry Rogachev, after whom the center is named today, did not expect that his name would become known worldwide. Being seriously ill, he met with the President of our country Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and asked him to build a center for children seriously ill like him. The decision made by the President allowed not only to create a unique center for then incurably ill children, but also to lay the foundation for the development of the hematological, oncological, and immunological pediatric service in Russia, which became an example for Europe and the whole world.””Today, the Dmitry Rogachev Center is a place where science turns into salvation, and advanced technologies become a chance for life,” said Tatyana Golikova.
She emphasized that every year children from all regions of our country undergo treatment at the Dmitry Rogachev Center. Last year alone, more than 17 thousand patients were hospitalized to receive high-tech medical care, and more than 3 thousand children underwent rehabilitation.
The Deputy Prime Minister noted that more than a quarter of all hematopoietic stem cell transplants in Russia are carried out at the center, which amounts to over 300 per year. It is one of the flagships in the implementation and application of CAR-T therapy in children, which has been included in the state guarantee program and is provided free of charge since this year. And today the launch of a scientific and production complex of biomedical technologies has been carried out. This will allow the center to independently produce up to 500 cell and gene therapy drugs for children per year.
Tatyana Golikova emphasized that currently in Russia, medical care for children with oncological and hematological diseases is provided in 11 federal centers and 110 specialized clinics in the country’s regions, including historically significant regions. Over the past five years, the number of oncological and hematological beds for children has increased by 17% – more than 3,500. Almost 450 doctors work in the country – pediatric oncologists and oncologist-hematologists. A network of 13 bone marrow transplantation centers for children has been established.
A clear scheme of routing children with oncological, hematological, and immunological diseases has been established – from the detection of the disease to the provision of all necessary assistance in full. The vigilance of medical workers allows for timely initiation of treatment wherever a sick child is registered today.
