Main news of the day at the UN and worldwide: strike on a food aid warehouse in Dnipro, escalation of hostilities in Lebanon, drone attacks in Sudanese Darfur, recommendations on international flights due to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Strike on the VPP warehouse in Dnipro
In the World Food Programme (WFP), the Russian strike on a warehouse in Dnipro, Ukraine, was condemned, as a result of which stocks of humanitarian aid were destroyed. According to UN agency data, the warehouse used by the WFP for its operations was “hit by a precision ballistic missile ‘Iskander’” on Monday. This is the second shelling of this facility in the past six months. The warehouse contained food supplies sufficient to provide assistance to 130,000 residents of frontline areas. The value of the destroyed stocks is estimated at approximately 1.4 million dollars.
Escalation in Lebanon
UN Interim Forces in Lebanon report large-scale military activity by Israel, as well as an attack, presumably carried out by Hezbollah, on Israeli forces. As a result of intensified airstrikes last night, residents of Lebanon were once again forced to flee their homes. There are nearly a million displaced persons in the country. UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq today reported that Israeli military forces have issued an evacuation order for the town of En-Nabatiyeh north of the Litani River for the first time.
War in Sudan
The UN expresses deep concern regarding the continuing drone strikes in the Darfur region of Sudan. In recent days, as a result of the attacks, civilians have died in several settlements. In particular, strikes on two towns near the Sudan-Chad border reportedly claimed at least 12 lives. The UN again calls on the parties to the conflict to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, as well as to ensure humanitarian access in accordance with international law. Furthermore, urgent additional funding is needed to provide assistance to millions of people in need throughout Sudan.
Ebola outbreak
Against the backdrop of the spread of the dangerous Ebola strain in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the recent confirmation of new cases of the disease in Uganda, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has called on governments and airlines to strictlyfollow sanitary recommendations, developed after the pandemicCOVID-19. More than 900 suspected cases of the disease and about 220 deaths possibly related to the virus have been registered in the DR Congo. The ICAO stressed that recommendations will be updated as necessary, but at the moment international flights are considered safe.
