UN, May 27 /Xinhua/ — Member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, Minister of Foreign Affairs of China Wang Yi held a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday on the sidelines of a high-level UN Security Council meeting dedicated to the protection of the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and strengthening the international system, the core of which is the UN.
In a meeting, Van I stated that the current international situation is full of turbulence, regional conflicts are flaring up in many places, and the UN is facing serious challenges while at the same time higher expectations are being placed on it.
As the chairman of the UN Security Council in May, China proposed an initiative to convene a high-level meeting on the protection of the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and the strengthening of the international system, with the UN as its core, in order to jointly reaffirm the fundamental spirit of the Charter with other countries, strengthen the authority of the UN, and form the widest possible consensus in this regard, the minister noted.
Being a convinced supporter of the UN, China is ready to continue to uphold the banner of multilateralism at a high level and firmly support the international system, whose core is the UN, said Van I. Beijing is ready to make efforts for the continuous deepening of cooperation with the UN in such areas as the development of South-South cooperation, reforming the international economic and financial system, as well as combating climate change, artificial intelligence, and resolving acute regional problems.
A. Guterres thanked the UN Secretariat for the initiative to convene a high-level meeting, which clearly demonstrates China’s unwavering support for multilateralism and the United Nations. He also expressed gratitude to Beijing for its steadfast commitment to observing the UN Charter and international law.
Noting that China is the most reliable partner in the field of sustainable development and makes a significant contribution to UN peacekeeping operations, A. Guterres stated that the world organization highly appreciates a number of global initiatives put forward by China in areas such as security, peace, and development, and counts on joint work on conflict resolution to ensure the predominance on the planet of peace, international law, and multilateralism.
The UN firmly supports General Assembly resolution 2758, which embodies the principle of one China, emphasized by A. Guterres, adding that there is no room for ambiguity in this matter. –0–
