Beijing, May 27 /Xinhua/ — A representative of the continental part of China on Wednesday interpreted recent statements by the head of the Taiwan administration Lai Ching-te as an attempt to distort the national identity of Taiwan residents and betrayal of the Chinese nation, noting that he will inevitably face the judgment of history.

Chen Bingxuan, official representative of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of the PRC, made such a statement at a press conference in response to the relevant question from the media.

Last week, Lai Ching-te delivered a speech on the occasion of the second anniversary of his tenure. This speech drew criticism from some observers who expressed the opinion that the administration of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on the island has changed its strategy, shifting the emphasis from ensuring the “de jure independence of Taiwan” to achieving what they call “de facto independence” in terms of self-identity and culture.

There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inseparable part of China, Chen Binshu emphasized. This is an indisputable historical and legal fact, on which there is broad consensus in the international community, he stressed.

“Taiwan has never been a separate state and never will be,” added the official representative.

Commenting on a recent post by Lai Chinde on social media, in which he rejected accusations of separatism, stating that the appropriate steps were aimed at maintaining the so-called “status quo” in Taiwan, Chen Binghua noted that the status quo is precisely that Taiwan is part of China.

In the party Constitution of the DPP, there are provisions of a separatist nature, he said, drawing attention to the fact that for many years while in power on the island, the DPP has been engaged in separatist activities.

According to Chen Binshu, despite changes in rhetoric aimed only at misleading public opinion, in reality the DPP seeks to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait area, which is based on the fact that both sides of the strait belong to one China. -0-
