Kaliningrad /Russia/, May 26 /Sinyua/ — The 10th China-Russia Youth Games started Monday evening in the Kaliningrad region.

The opening ceremony was held at “Yantar-Holle” in the city of Svetlogorsk on the shore of the Baltic Sea. The Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Mikhail Degtyarev read out the greeting from the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin.

“The games are held in the westernmost region of Russia, the Kaliningrad region, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. It is with satisfaction that it is noted that, having started in 2006 in Tianjin, this large-scale international project has significantly strengthened its unifying, creative, and educational potential. Of course, holding the games fully reflects the traditional partnership and friendly relations between the peoples of Russia and China, and is an important component of our humanitarian interaction,” read M. Degtyarev.

The minister noted that for the first time, the Russian national martial art sambo was included in the games program. In addition, athletes from Russia and China aged 11 to 20 will compete for medals in badminton, basketball, volleyball, boxing, beach volleyball, table tennis, synchronized swimming, rock climbing, wrestling, rhythmic gymnastics, and wushu.

“This year marks the 20th anniversary of the inception of the China-Russia Youth Games, and we hope that they will become an important link connecting the past and the future, sowing the seeds of friendship in the hearts of the youth of both countries,” added the Deputy Head of the Main State Directorate for Physical Culture and Sports, KN Chzhan Tszyashen.

The Governor of Kaliningrad Oblast, Alexey Besprozvanny, emphasized at the opening ceremony that the games are held in the year of the 80th anniversary of the westernmost region of the Russian Federation. They are a symbol of strong friendship, mutual respect, and partnership between Russia and China, the official added.

The 10th China-Russia Youth Games will be held in the Kaliningrad region from May 24 to 31.
