Chongqing, May 24 /Xinhua/ — More than 10 people went missing as a result of heavy rains in the Yunchuan area of Chongqing city /Southwest China/ on Saturday evening. This was reported by local authorities.
According to the city meteorological department, from 23:00 on Saturday to 00:00 on Sunday, heavy downpours fell on certain districts in the central and western parts of the city. The most abundant precipitation was recorded in the villages of Guankouvan and Hanzhiagou in the Yunchuan district, where the amounts reached 296.7 mm and 256.9 mm respectively.
Considering the short interval between the current and previous cycles of heavy precipitation, continuous precipitation creates a higher risk of geological disasters, including landslides, collapses, and mudflows, local meteorological agencies said.
On May 24 at 07:00 local time, a third-level geological disaster response regime was introduced in the Yunchuan area. Local relevant departments are conducting search and rescue operations.
