Xichang, May 23 /Xin Hua/ — One of the astronauts of the “Shenzhou-23” crew, which will be launched into space on Sunday, will conduct a year-long experiment on staying in orbit, the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) reported on Saturday.
Chinese astronauts Chu Yangzhu, Zhang Zhiyuan, and Li Cixiang will perform the piloted space mission “Shenzhou-23.” Who among them will be selected to conduct the year-long experiment on orbit will be determined depending on how the mission in orbit proceeds, stated CMSA official representative Zhang Czinbo at a press conference.
Zhan Tsinbo noted that during the year-long experiment on orbit, China will carry out its first space program for the study of the human organism to collect important data about the cosmonaut under conditions of long-term space flight.
“Assigning a cosmonaut to conduct a year-long experiment on orbit is not just doubling the duration of two six-month missions,” said Zhang Zhinbo.
According to him, this experiment will allow checking the possibilities of maintaining astronauts’ health during long flights, as well as improving the medical service and protection systems in orbit.
Zhan Tsinbo noted that this will also provide opportunities for long-term uninterrupted research within the framework of scientific projects and verification of relevant technologies.
As of today, the “Shenzhou-21” crew has been on orbit for 203 days, thanks to which, as expected, a new record will be set for the duration of the Chinese crew’s stay in orbit. -0-
