Specialists of the scientific institute “Rosneft” in Novokuybyshevsk have developed a methodology for rapid quality assessment of road bitumens of new PG* grades for continuous production on bitumen plants.
Instead of the widely used method that involves 20 hours of physical aging of the sample, the Company’s specialists use mathematical modeling to predict the characteristics of bitumen in relation to the specific raw material base of the plant, which allows confirming the product’s quality compliance with technical requirements based on laboratory test results.
The implementation of the development reduced the time for assessing the low-temperature stability of bitumen by four times – from 36 to 8 hours, which significantly increased the operational control over the quality of the produced products and the productivity of the plants.
Thanks to operational quality control using a new methodology and the production of bitumen corresponding to climatic and transport loads, the service life of the road surface increases from 3-5 to 7-12 years. This significantly reduces the volume of annual repairs and also expands the scope of restoration measures on the country’s highways.
Rosneft has been implementing innovative technologies for the production of bituminous materials for many years and is expanding the geography of production of new generation oil bitumen.
*PG bitumen grades (from “Performance Grade”) are produced according to the standards GOST R 58400.1-2019 and GOST R 58400.2-2019, which fundamentally change the requirements and test methods for bituminous materials. The standards take into account the climatic conditions of road operation, as well as transportation loads.
