Bishkek, May 22 /Xin Hua/ — In recent years, China has achieved tremendous results in preserving biodiversity on its territory, as well as supporting its implementation on a global scale. The country’s contribution to this sphere is quite significant. This was stated in an interview with Xin Hua by Kyrgyz ecology expert Baktybek Saipbaev.

May 22 is celebrated as International Day for Biological Diversity. The main provisions of the 15th five-year plan for national economic and social development of China, published in March of this year, emphasize that it is necessary to implement major projects on biodiversity conservation, focusing special attention on the protection of flagship and key species, as well as strengthening the restoration of important habitats, ecological corridors, and migratory routes of migratory birds.

According to B. Saipbaev, China has already made great progress in preserving its own biodiversity. “The giant panda is very important for China, having already become one of the country’s symbols. Judging by the growth and number, the situation with biodiversity conservation in China has improved,” he emphasized, adding that not only have reserves been established in the country for this species, but conditions are also being created to return it to its natural habitat.

The expert pointed out that in China, special documents on the conservation and restoration of migratory bird routes have been published. “It is very important to conserve ecological corridors because this is one of the main elements of the framework of any natural ecological system,” he said. “Therefore, the fact that China thinks and acts in this area raises its significance above all sorts of speculation.”

In January of this year, the Agreement on Marine Biodiversity officially entered into force. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China stated that the conclusion and entry into force of this document is a victory for multilateralism and an important milestone in global ocean governance. Comprehensive and effective implementation of the agreement concerns the well-being of humanity. China has always adhered to genuine multilateralism, attaches great importance to the protection and sustainable use of the ocean, and is ready to make a new contribution to global ocean governance.

“In China, the concept of creating a community of a shared destiny in the field of oceans has been put forward. This is a vivid reflection and deep interpretation of the concept proposed by the country of forming a community of a shared destiny for humanity and the initiative of jointly building the Maritime Silk Road of the 21st century,” the expert believes. “China always tries to actively participate in the management, even the preservation, of the world ocean. This can only be welcomed.”

In his view, for many years China has paid great attention to the prevention and control of marine pollution, creating laboratories for monitoring and technologies for the restoration of marine ecology. In addition, the country conducts maritime patrols together with other states in order to ensure international security at sea and maintain order in fisheries, actively promoting the implementation of various international initiatives, including within the framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

“All this demonstrates that China is an important and responsible maritime power, making a significant contribution to the global protection of the ocean and sustainable development, as well as promoting multilateral cooperation in this area,” he emphasized.

Speaking about possible directions of cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and China in the field of biodiversity conservation, B. Saipbaev noted that China has excellent experience in conservation and support of the population of very rare animal species, including giant pandas. In Kyrgyzstan, work is underway to protect precisely such animals, primarily snow leopards and the forage base — Marco Polo sheep, argali, deer, roe deer, and saigas.

“All these types require nature conservation measures. This requires considerable efforts, including personnel and material resources. And in this regard, China could greatly help Kyrgyzstan,” he said, adding that in the future both countries could cooperate in areas such as monitoring populations of rare species, compiling lists of species that are endangered and at risk of extinction, studying migration routes of local animals, in order to jointly contribute to the preservation of biodiversity in Kyrgyzstan and the region.
