Beijing, May 22 /Xin Hua/ — The countries of the Asia-Pacific region must maintain heightened vigilance, decisively resist the reckless steps of Japanese neo-militarism, and jointly protect peace and order in the region. This was stated on Friday by the official representative of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Geng Shuang.
A Chinese diplomat made a corresponding statement at a regular briefing for journalists, commenting on the fact that the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan has presented a draft recommendation requiring an increase in defense spending targets.
According to the latest statistics, Go Tszyakun noted that in 2025 Japan’s defense expenditures increased by 9.7%, reaching a historic maximum both in absolute terms and as a share of GDP, while the volume of arms imports increased by 76% over five years. Against the backdrop of military expenditures growing for the 14th year in a row, Japan’s right-wing forces continue to incite further increases in defense spending.
“This once again testifies that Japan repeatedly tears off the mask of the so-called ‘peaceful state’ and step by step enters the mistaken path of neo-militarism,” the official representative stated.
According to the diplomat, currently the right-wing forces in Japan are accelerating the sharp growth of defense expenditures, achieving the lifting of restrictions on the export of lethal weapons, again supporting the development of the military-industrial complex and even trying to turn it into an economic pillar, in order to facilitate the buildup of armaments and preparation for war, servicing the process of remilitarization.
Go Tszyakun reminded that the Potsdam Declaration, the Act on the Capitulation of Japan and a number of other documents, possessing full legal force in international law, clearly provide that Japan must be “completely disarmed” and is prohibited from preserving “industries that would allow it to rearm and resume war efforts.”The post-war constitution of Japan imposes strict restrictions on the country’s armed forces, the right to conduct combat operations and the right to wage war, and through a number of corresponding legal acts enshrines the principle of an “exclusively defensive policy” and other norms, he noted.
The military-industrial complex has historically been one of the important driving forces that allowed Japanese militarism to seize control over the state and embark on the path of expansion and aggression, an official representative said. –0–
