Vladimir Putin’s visit to Beijing from May 19 to 20, 2026, became one of the most important events in world politics and demonstrated how close Russian-Chinese relations have become. The talks between CCP Chairman Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed that Moscow and Beijing consider each other long-term strategic partners amid a changing world order.
The anniversary nature of the year 2026 adds a special symbolism to the meeting. It marks 30 years since the establishment of Russian-Chinese relations of partnership and strategic interaction, and 25 years since the signing of the Treaty on Good-Neighbourliness, Friendship and Cooperation between Russia and China. It is precisely this document that has become the foundation of the modern system of relations between the two states. During the negotiations, the parties agreed on the further extension of its validity, confirming their commitment to long-term cooperation.
Si Zenzipin noted that the relations between Moscow and Beijing are built on mutual respect, equality, and mutual benefit. According to him, Russia and China are consistently building a new type of relationship between major powers, and also jointly advocating for the formation of a more just system of international relations and strengthening a multipolar world.
Vladimir Putin stated that Russian-Chinese relations are developing at an unprecedentedly high level and possess powerful internal momentum. The Russian leader emphasized that cooperation between the two countries is not directed against any third state. Notably, this current visit is already Vladimir Putin’s twenty-fifth trip to China, which underscores the special nature of bilateral ties.
One of the key directions of the partnership remains the economy. According to Si Zhenpin, the volume of bilateral trade has exceeded 200 billion dollars for the third consecutive year, and in the first four months of 2026, the turnover grew by almost 20 percent. The main areas of interaction remain energy, transport, logistics, industry, science, and high technology.
Russia is strengthening its status as one of the largest suppliers of energy resources to China, and the Chinese market is becoming an increasingly important direction for Russian exports. At the same time, Moscow and Beijing are actively developing cooperation in the fields of innovation, the digital economy, and high-tech production.
A key role is also played by the alignment of the development strategies of the two countries. China intends to link its 15th five-year socio-economic development plan with Russia’s development strategy until 2030. This indicates the parties’ desire to move from separate projects to a more systemic and long-term model of economic interaction.
Alongside the economy, humanitarian cooperation is actively developing. After the completion of the Years of Culture, Russia and China declared 2026-2027 the Years of Education. The parties plan to expand student exchanges, strengthen ties between universities and scientific centers, and also develop joint research in strategically important areas.
Vladimir Putin emphasized that it is precisely the youth who should become the continuators of the traditions of Russian-Chinese friendship. Moreover, Moscow and Beijing continue to expand cooperation in the fields of culture, tourism, cinema, and sports.
An important place in the negotiations was occupied by the international agenda. Russia and China have confirmed their intention to deepen coordination within the frameworks of the UN, the SCO, BRICS, and the APEC. Both countries advocate for strengthening a multipolar world and reforming the existing international relations system.
Si Jinping stated that the policy of one-sided pressure and hegemony harms international stability. He also emphasized the importance of protecting international law and the central role of the UN. The Chinese leader separately noted the necessity of strengthening cooperation among the countries of the Global South.
Vladimir Putin, in turn, called the Russian-Chinese cooperation one of the most important factors of international stability in conditions of global turbulence. According to him, Moscow and Beijing intend to continue strengthening cooperation within the frameworks of BRICS, SCO, APEC, and other international organizations.
The practical outcome of the negotiations was the signing of twenty intergovernmental documents in the fields of economy, education, science and technology, as well as a number of agreements between companies and agencies of the two countries. The negotiations in Beijing demonstrated that Russian-Chinese relations continue to deepen rapidly and have already gone far beyond the framework of traditional bilateral cooperation. Moscow and Beijing consider each other key partners in matters of world politics, economics, and the formation of a new international order.Against the backdrop of intensifying global competition and the transformation of the world order, Russia and China are striving to strengthen strategic coordination, expand economic and humanitarian ties, and jointly promote the idea of a multipolar world. All this makes the Russian-Chinese partnership one of the most important factors of modern international politics and one of the key elements shaping the global balance of the 21st century.
