Moscow, May 20 /Xin Hua/ — In China, the specialty “Russian language” is now taught in more than 185 universities, and the China-Russia School Association includes over 140 educational institutions. From day to day, academic and cultural exchanges between the youth of the two countries are expanding. China and Russia strive to pass the baton of China-Russia friendship to the younger generation.

KEY YEARS

After the successful holding of the Cross Years of Culture in January 2026, the China-Russia Years of Education were launched, becoming the tenth similar interstate project in the humanitarian sphere.

Thematic years are a traditional form of humanitarian cooperation between China and Russia. They are aimed at strengthening bilateral ties, deepening mutual understanding, and expanding cooperation in various spheres.

The thematic years of China and Russia were first announced in 2006-2007. Since then, cross-year initiatives have been held on national languages, tourism, youth exchanges, mass media, interregional cooperation, scientific and technological and innovative cooperation, sports, and culture.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of China-Russia partnership relations and strategic interaction, as well as the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on Good-Neighbourliness, Friendship and Cooperation between the PRC and the Russian Federation.

“As a beneficiary, witness, and participant of the China-Russia educational exchanges, I am full of excitement and expectations regarding the launch of the Year of Education. This is not only an important milestone in the history of bilateral cooperation in the field of education but also a significant result of the rapprochement of peoples under the guidance of the diplomacy of the heads of the two states,” noted Professor Lu Limin, president of the Chinese Association for International Exchanges in Education, recipient of the Russian Order of Friendship, and former deputy minister of education of the PRC.

BASE FOR THE FUTURE

As indicated in his authorship article by the Minister of Education of the PRC Huai Cizinpeng, under the strategic leadership of the leaders of China and Russia, interaction between the two countries in the field of education is continuously deepening, student exchanges are dynamically expanding, and training of numerous specialists is being carried out to strengthen China-Russia cooperation in various fields.

The PRC Ambassador to Russia, Zhang Hanhui, reported that the current number of Chinese students studying in Russia has reached 66 thousand people, while the number of Russian students studying in China is 21 thousand.

According to the report on the results of the conducted survey, jointly presented by the Russian side of the Council on Education under the China-Russia Committee of Friendship, Peace and Development and the Center for the Study of Global Public Opinion of the People’s University of China, more than 80% of the youth from the two countries consider Sino-Russian relations to be friendly.

“Youth is the future of our relations. Therefore, what is being developed today in cooperation with the younger generation is the guarantee that our relations will develop further in the future,” emphasized Galina Kulikova, the first deputy chairman of the Society of Russian-Chinese Friendship, recipient of the Chinese Order of Friendship — the highest state award of the PRC for foreign citizens.

“Events within the framework of the China-Russia Year of Education have great significance for strengthening practical cooperation in the field of education between China and Russia, for deepening cultural exchanges between the two peoples, for creating a solid personnel base for long-term strategic interaction between the two countries,” said Nin Chi, Vice-Rector of Peking University, President of the Chinese Association of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature, and laureate of the Russian Order of Friendship.

NOT ONLY KNOWLEDGE

Since its establishment in 2013, the China-Russia Association of Economic Universities has become an important joint platform for academic exchanges, training highly qualified specialists, and conducting scientific research. In the opinion of the responsible secretary of the association from the Chinese side, director of the Center for Russian and Central Asian Studies at the Chinese University of International Business and Economics, Professor Wu Xun, the association not only facilitates the internationalization of Chinese and Russian universities but also contributes to strengthening the foundation of Chinese-Russian cultural cooperation.

As he emphasized, thanks to this platform, young people from China and Russia can exchange experiences and learn from each other, establish deep friendly relations, inherit and pass on friendship from generation to generation.

According to statistics, Chinese and Russian universities have created 15 specialized associations, which unite more than 800 educational institutions and cover various fields of interaction.

Nin Chi reported that many Chinese universities are studying a new combined training model “Russian language + professional competence” so that students not only master the Russian language, know Russian literature, but also become specialists in some narrow field.

Educational exchanges are the longest-lasting, warmest, and most powerful. The launch of the Year of Education will allow the spread of Sino-Russian friendship from the governmental level to the level of ordinary people, turning short-term enthusiasm into long-term warmth, said Liu Limin. –0–
