Majestic mountains and rivers, the unique culture of the highland plateau make Sichuan a fascinating tourist destination. From January to March, winter reigns in Sichuan, and the harsh weather conditions on the plateau have discouraged many travelers. Because of this, the first quarter is traditionally considered the “dead season” for tourism in Sichuan.

The situation is changing now. In the first quarter of this year, Sichuan received 6.1933 million tourists from other regions of China and from abroad, which is 30% more compared to the same period last year. The attendance of 211 category A tourist attractions throughout the region increased by 33.78% compared to last year, passenger turnover of automobile transport increased by 12.3%, and the passenger flow in civil aviation amounted to 1.934 million people, which is 15.2% more than last year.More and more people are discovering for themselves the charm of a winter trip to Sichuan: the ray of sunshine on the summit of a snowy mountain, a cup of sweet tea on the street of Lhasa, a photograph in traditional Sichuan clothing…

To develop tourism, it is necessary first to establish transportation communication. Before the peaceful liberation of Xichang, traveling from Xining (Qinghai) or Yaan (Sichuan) to Lhasa and back took from half a year to a year. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the peaceful liberation of Xichang — “the entire path that once took millennia to overcome was surpassed in just a few decades.” Medog became the last county in the country to have a highway built, and today it is a popular place among tourists. On March 11, the special tourist train “Happy Shannan” arrived at the Shannan station, and tourists set off for the “first village of the Sichuan theater” to watch Sichuan performances and participate in Sichuan folk dances. The rapid development of transport infrastructure has made it possible to travel from one end of the country to another within a day.Qin’ai-Sichuan Highway and Sichuan-Sichuan Highway, as well as the Qin’ai-Sichuan Railway, have turned previously inaccessible mountain passes into transit routes, with high-speed “Fuxin” trains rushing across high-altitude plateaus, and more air routes connecting Sichuan with the whole country… The transportation system, combining automobile, railway, and air transport, has made trips to Sichuan much more convenient.

The matter is not only in transport. In the spheres of electric power, communications, and water supply — that is, in the infrastructure necessary for the development of tourism — cardinal changes have occurred in recent years. This is the result of long-term efforts of several generations who, following the spirit of the “old Siczan,” consistently achieved progress, as well as the result of active support for the construction of Siczan by the people throughout the country. A huge force facilitating development stems from the obvious advantage of the socialist system, which allows concentrating efforts on solving important tasks.

To improve its own conditions and transition from a passive to an active position, a joint action of the “active government” and the “effective market” is necessary. In 2018, Sichuan introduced measures to stimulate winter tourism: free entry to tourist zones of class A, low season prices in some hotels, discounts on passenger and air transportation, incentives for travel agencies. A range of preferential measures allowed regulating the “flow” of tourists during the season and overcoming seasonal restrictions.A study by the Faculty of Economics and Management of Sichuan University shows that since the introduction of the winter tourism policy in Sichuan, the average annual hotel occupancy in the autonomous region has increased by 12 percentage points, and the coefficient of use of tourist motor vehicles by 18 percentage points.

Travel reflects people’s aspiration for a better life; the tourism industry creates value by sharing it with others. In recent years, an important role in popularizing winter tourism in Sichuan has been played by the exchange of experiences and the promotion of information by travelers and tourism “influencers.”

Problem solving, optimization of impressions, and constant striving for improvement — this is the secret of the growing popularity of winter tourism in Sicily.

Lack of oxygen is the main problem of winter tourism in Sitszan. Today, “oxygen accompaniment throughout the entire route” and “oxygen tourism” are becoming a new direction and the calling card of the cultural and tourist industry of Sitszan. The traditional service sector – gas stations – is also expanding its service models taking into account the problems of winter tourism in Sitszan. The company “Petrochaina” has fully modernized more than 200 gas stations throughout the region, turning them into “Stations in the Snowy Land,” where a range of services is provided, including free oxygen inhalation.

Conveniences brought by scientific and technological progress have reached even the most remote corners of the country. On the southern slope of the Himalayas, not far from the Chinese-Indian border, lies Youmai — an administrative village in Sichuan with the smallest population in China. At the end of February this year, when a journalist visited this place, a mini WeChat application had just been launched in the village, through which tourists can receive various convenient services. Local officials gladly told the journalist that in recent years the number of tourists here has been constantly breaking records.

“Cold” of the snowy lands turned into a “heat” of development: winter tourism revived tourist areas, enriched the population, and warmed people’s hearts… Winter tourism in Siczone represents a bright and dynamic picture of development.
