Jerusalem, May 18 /Sina/ — Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated on Sunday that the Israeli armed forces have begun implementing the recently adopted law on the death penalty concerning Palestinians convicted of murdering Jews in the occupied West Bank of the Jordan River.

He reported that he gave the military an order to proceed with the implementation of the law after its approval by parliament on March 30. I. Katz noted that this step sends a “clear signal” to the killers of Jews that they will “pay the highest price” for their actions.

The procedure for the application of the law is set out in an amendment to the military order signed by the commander of the Israeli forces on the West Bank of the Jordan River.

In the new decree, a copy of which was reviewed by Xinhuanet, it is stated that the law will only apply to residents of the West Bank who have committed an attack with the intention to “deny the existence of the State of Israel or the authority of the military commander in the area,” that is, in fact, it will apply to Palestinians killing Jews, but not to Israeli settlers or soldiers killing Palestinians.

The law sparked criticism from Palestinians and the European Union, where it was called a “cause for serious concern.” Human rights organizations also condemned the law, stating that it is discriminatory in nature and may violate guarantees of a fair trial.
