Seoul, May 17 /Xinhua/ — The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea (ROK), Cho Hyun, held telephone talks on Sunday with his Iranian colleague Abbas Araghchi. According to the ROK Ministry of Foreign Affairs, they discussed the current situation in the Middle East, bilateral relations, as well as the safety and passage of South Korean ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

Noting that the IRGC is conducting an additional investigation into the recent attack on the vessel HMM NAMU, operated by a South Korean company, Cho Hyun asked the Iranian side to state its position on the facts of this case and emphasized the importance of safety and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz for all vessels, including South Korean ones.

Earlier, the joint government investigative group of the RK confirmed that on May 4, two unidentified aerial objects hit the stern of a vessel flying the Panama flag in the Strait of Hormuz. There were 24 crew members on board; none of them were injured.

A. Aragchi elaborated in detail on Iran’s position regarding the current situation in the Middle East. He stated that safe passage through the strait must be restored, while simultaneously calling for a swift way out of the deadlock formed in the region.

Ministers have agreed to maintain contacts on the issue of the safety of South Korean vessels and crew members in the Strait of Hormuz, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. –0–
