At the international children’s center “Artek,” the fourth shift “Sunny Winds of the Universe” took place, in which 72 schoolchildren from various regions of Russia participated. The children were selected based on the results of a competition organized by the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University of Peter the Great — a longtime thematic partner of “Artek.”

During the shift, participants mastered three additional general development programs at Polite, each with a volume of 24 academic hours. Classes were conducted by university teachers and researchers.

In the program “How It Works: Mechanical Engineering” (educator: Alexander Chumakov), students became familiar with the full production cycle of a product — from the design department to the quality control department. They learned to read drawings, work in the automated design system “KOMPAS-3D”, create 3D models of parts and assemblies, and mastered measuring instruments.

The program “Digital Measurement System Based on Arduino and LabVIEW” (instructor: Dmitry Dolzhenko) was dedicated to creating a custom digital multimeter. Participants studied the basics of electronics, programming Arduino microcontrollers in C++, connected sensors, and mastered the LabVIEW visual programming environment for data display.

In the direction “Smart City 4.0: wheeled unmanned transport” (teacher: Georgiy Vasilyanov), the kids immersed themselves in the world of unmanned systems. They worked in the Linux operating system, studied the ROS2 framework and the Python language, programmed navigation algorithms and controlled a small wheeled autonomous robot, and participated in competitions on autonomous movement.

In addition to the educational program, schoolchildren actively participated in the life of “Artek”: general camp events, festivals, campaigns. The final chord of the shift was an environmental campaign. The kids planted three Himalayan cedars on the Russian glade of the “Gorny” park, donated by the university.

For Politeca, partnership with “Artek” is not just an educational project, but an opportunity to lay the foundation of the future of Russian science and engineering. It is important for us that the children not only receive relevant knowledge here but also feel their involvement in the development of the country. The Himalayan cedars planted with their own hands by the participants of the shift, transferred by the university, will become a living reminder of their first steps into the world of big science.I am sure that many of these 72 schoolchildren will return to MDC more than once or come to our university, observing how their own talents and professional ambitions grow stronger together with these trees,” noted Dmitry Tisonov, Vice-Rector for Additional and Pre-University Education at SPbPU.

After the shift ended, all participants received personalized certificates from SPbPU and “Artek.” Many of them have already begun to consider continuing their education at the Polytechnic and participating in new engineering projects.
