More than eight thousand Moscow high school students became participants in the “In the Center of Science” project this school year. It is aimed at popularizing scientific activity among schoolchildren. Over the course of several months, the children conducted research in ecology, biology, mathematics, physics, chemistry, geography, and other subjects. This was reported by the press service of the capital cityDepartment of Education and Science.
“The ‘Science Center’ unites schoolchildren, teachers, and young scientists. This year, the project involved more than 12 thousand participants, including eight thousand high school students. The kids learn how to conduct research and also create their own developments. Thus, within the framework of the project, schoolchildren defended more than 400 scientific works. In the future, their results can be implemented into the urban environment, educational practice, and the capital’s healthcare system,” the agency’s press service reported.
For their own projects, schoolchildren studied selected disciplines in depth and immersed themselves in scientific research. They attended master classes and festivals, worked in laboratories, consulted with mentors and experts from leading universities: Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, the National Research University Higher School of Economics, Patrice Lumumba People’s Friendship University of Russia, Central University, and others. In the scientific-experimental course, schoolchildren learned how to conduct experiments and carry out research. The result was the defense of projects at a conference.
One of the project participants, Vitaliy Titov from Bauman Engineering School No. 1580, researched approaches to creating a device that generates random numbers based on quantum effects. Such technology is important for ensuring data security, where a simple pseudorandom sequence of numbers is insufficient.
Student of school No. 947 Anastasia Levchenko studied the influence of genetic factors on biological clocks. She found out why some people find it easier to work in the morning, while others prefer late evening. This data can be useful in developing personalized recommendations for daily schedules, study, and rest.
Student of School No. 1514 Ekaterina Kabalevskaya found out how mood affects the perception of information. It turned out that a person in a good mood is more likely to trust dubious statements. The girl’s work can become a basis for developing media literacy and protection against disinformation.
A student of school No. 1558 named after Rosalia de Castro, Artem Reutsky, is researching how winter triticale (a hybrid of wheat and rye) responds to soil salinity. The work showed at what salt level it is able to grow and at what point it loses viability. This data will help farmers working on saline lands to choose suitable crops and increase yield.
Aleksey Valadov from school No. 962 studied variants of a natural filter based on chitin from the shells of crustaceans. This material is ecological, safe, and decomposes in soil, and its application will help create affordable methods of water purification from microplastics.
The project “At the Center of Science” has been operating since 2024. The coordinator isCenter for Pedagogical ExcellencecapitalDepartment of Education and Science. The project unites schoolchildren, teachers, young scientists, mentors, companies, laboratories, and universities.
