By the end of 2025, the level of rural districts supplied with tap water across the country reached 96%, large-scale water supply projects covered 71% of the rural population, and the share of counties delivering unified management of rural water supply at the county level reached 72%.

Moreover, the proportion of the population, mainly relying on water intake wells and water reservoirs, decreased by 79 percent compared to the figure recorded at the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020).

During the implementation period of the 14th Five-Year Plan for the country’s economic and social development /2021-2025/, a total of 914.9 billion yuan (about 133.71 billion USD) was invested in the construction of water management facilities in the poverty-stricken districts, of which 145.5 billion yuan was allocated to investments in the construction of hydrotechnical facilities and water conservancy structures in counties receiving priority state support as part of the rural revitalization program.

China aims to increase the coverage of piped water supply in rural areas to 97 percent by the end of 2026, with the share of the rural population covered by large-scale water supply projects expected to reach 73 percent, the ministry reported.
