Evening of one-act ballets “Phantom Ball” and “Class Concert”

Dates:14 and 15 May

Age restriction:12+

“Phantom Ball” by Dmitry Bryantsev and “Class Concert” by Maksim Sevagin — a wonderful opportunity in oneeveningget acquainted with two authorial views on ballet.

Dmitry Bryantsev, the chief choreographer of MAMT from 1985 to 2004, staged “The Phantom Ballet” to the music of Frédéric Chopin in 1995. Critics called the performance his most refined production. The creation story wasn’t quick: at first, Bryantsev came up with the number “Romantic Duet” to the music of the second part of the First Piano Concerto, and over time new episodes were born, resonant in idea and atmosphere.

Young choreographer Maksim Sevagin (since 2022 — artistic director of the theatre’s ballet company) turned to the works of Daniel Ober and Jacques Offenbach. He combined their music with the aesthetics of classical ballet lessons — thus “Class Concert” was born. In the first part, melodies by Ober are played. The main task for the artists is to demonstrate academic precision, the purity of lines, and the virtuosity of classical dance. The second part is devoted to Offenbach’s music and represents a reference to the classics of ballet art, including the legendary ballerina Anna Pavlova and the Italian dancer and teacher Enrico Cecchetti.

An evening of one-act ballets “In a Dark Image”, “Little Death”, “Minus 16”

Dates:May 22 and 23

In the MAMT poster — another oneEvening of one-act ballets. For the first time, Maksim Sevagin’s production “In the Dark Image,” created to the music of Antonio Vivaldi, was shown in 2022 at the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre named after P.I. Tchaikovsky, and in 2024 it was staged at MAMT. The performance consists of several parts: ensemble fragments, a duet, a quartet, a trio. Nine performers come on stage. There are no decorations: the audience’s attention is focused solely on the artists. According to Maksim Sevagin, he always wanted to stage a performance to baroque music, and two string concerts by Vivaldi allowed him to find something new for himself and the ballet stage.

“A Little Death” by Czech choreographer Jiří Kylián was created for the 200th anniversary of the death of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The dance, in which 12 artists interact with rapiers, became an author’s metaphor for groupness and struggle, death and closeness. The ballet, which became part of Kylián’s cycle “Black-and-White Ballets,” was first presented at the Salzburg Festival in 1991. The production is distinguished by minimalist decor, monochrome costumes, and a combination of classical ballet technique with contemporary choreography.

The third ballet of the evening — “Minus 16” by Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin. It introduces its audience to the dance language “Gaga”, which emphasizes not the outward form of movements, but the very own physical sensations. Moreover, “Minus 16” removes the fourth wall — the audience themselves can become participants in the performance.

In 1980, ballerina and ballet master-choreographer Natalia Makarova created her own version of “La Bayadère” — more dynamic, dramatic, placing emphasis on the main heroine. The production was also successfully staged on foreign stages. It is to this version that audiences are invited.

Evening of one-act ballets “Reflections. Queens of variations”

Date:7 June

Age restriction:12+

Evening of one-act balletscombines two independent productions — Yuri Posokhov’s neoclassical ballet “Reflections” and Maksim Sevagin’s new work “Queen of Variations”.

“Reflections” by Yuri Posokhov was staged in 2005 for the San Francisco troupe to the music of Felix Mendelssohn. In 2024, the author transferred the ballet to the stage of MAMT, where it has been very successful. The visual component is especially interesting: the black-white-red design perfectly combines with tall mirrors, enhancing the overall impression.

“The Queens of Variations” is a study by Maksim Sevagin, where he reflects on the history of ballet art, the form of academic dance. The main heroines are four ballerinas who embody different eras — from the 1830s to the present day.

“Sylphide”

The performance was revolutionary: Taglioni was the first to wear pointe shoes, aiming thereby to emphasize the lightness of his heroine.

The second version appeared several years later, presented by the Danish choreographer August Bournonville. The Danish Royal Ballet did not receive permission from Talloni to perform, but the theater introduced its audience to the production. In 1972, French choreographer Pierre Lacotte restored the original production based on archival recordings, eyewitness accounts, and old engravings. In 2011, it was performed on the MAMT stage. Lacotte himself supervised the rehearsals then.
