At the 224th session of the UNESCO Executive Board in Paris, France, Mount Siguniang was successfully included in the global network of geoparks.
Mount Siguniang (Siguniang National Park) is located in the Xiaojin County of Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province. The area of the geopark is 2764.01 square kilometers. It is situated in the transition zone between the Qionglai-Sichuan Plateau and the Sichuan Basin, and is characterized by a typical glacial relief and very high mountain peaks, containing rich information about the geological evolution of the region.
Geological natural monuments of the mountains reflect the processes of Earth’s evolution over hundreds of millions of years and possess important scientific value and global significance.
The Shiguan Mountain Global Geopark is also a habitat for numerous species of animals and plants. More than 2000 species of higher plants grow here, including the largest and oldest natural sea buckthorn forest in the world. The park is home to more than 300 species of vertebrate animals, among which are the giant panda and the snow leopard.
Thus, the number of global geoparks in Sichuan Province has increased to four.
