Paris, May 10 /Xin Hua/ — French President Emmanuel Macron on May 9 announced a law on the restitution of cultural valuables acquired illegally. This was reported on Sunday by the official government bulletin Journal Officiel.

The bill is aimed at creating clearer and simpler legal frameworks for the return of cultural valuables acquired by France through illegal means, including looting, theft, and forced sale. The scope covers cultural valuables acquired between November 20, 1815, and April 23, 1972, excluding war items and certain archaeological objects.

According to the long-existing principle of inalienability of public collections in France, cultural objects could previously be returned to countries and places of origin only through the application of special legislative norms and only in specific cases and in limited quantities.

On May 7, the Senate /the upper chamber of the French parliament/ approved the bill with 343 votes “for” and no votes “against” after, on May 6, the revised bill was adopted by the National Assembly /the lower chamber of parliament/ of the country with 141 votes “for” and no votes “against”. –0–
