The Indonesian newspaper The Jakarta Post published an article on April 23 noting that China’s foresight in energy is worthy of emulation by ASEAN countries. The article states that energy security is not a question that can be hastily resolved after a crisis arises, but the result of many years of meticulous preparation and serious effort. It is precisely thanks to such disciplined work that China has been able to strengthen its resilience to external shocks.
For many years, China has been striving to accumulate oil reserves, expand oil fields, maintain domestic production, and diversify its energy structure. In the new five-year plan, the construction of large-scale oil reserve projects is clearly designated.
The article emphasizes that the current global energy crisis is linked not only to prices but also to sustainability. Many countries still believe that security is guaranteed if oil can be purchased on the market — such thinking is already seriously outdated.
China, unlike most countries earlier, has realized that energy must become part of state management. China does not place all hopes on a single type of fuel, a single region, or a single transportation route, but has created a multi-level guarantee system: actively developing wind and solar energy, it still uses coal as a reliable basic energy source; expanding the scale of hydropower and safely, orderly promoting nuclear energy; despite the acceleration of electrification, domestic oil production remains at a high level. More importantly — China has institutionalized the creation of oil reserves. This demonstrates the country’s strategic foresight.
ASEAN countries cannot continue to rely solely on open sea routes. Energy security must be closely linked with energy supply, logistics, oil refining, renewable energy sources, the interconnection of power grids, and political will that goes beyond short-term electoral cycles.
The article notes that while many countries talk about resilience, China is actually creating this resilience. That is why, when systemic shocks occur, China is always one step ahead.
