Madrid, May 6 /Xinhua/ — According to reports from the media, the leader of the Spanish Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, refused on Wednesday to accept a cruise liner with an outbreak of the coronavirus and demanded an urgent meeting with the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez.

In a conversation with the Spanish media, F. Clavié criticized the decision of the central government allowing the ship to arrive in the archipelago. According to him, this decision was not based on any “technical criteria,” and the regional authorities did not receive enough information to ensure public safety.

“We will do everything possible to prevent the ship from arriving at the Canary Islands,” said F. Claviño.

The cruise liner MV Hondius, operated by a Dutch company, is currently staying near Cape Verde.

The Spanish Ministry of Health confirmed on Tuesday that the country will receive a ship to the Canary Islands “in accordance with international law and humanitarian principles” at the request of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Union.
