Main news at the UN and in the world: the UN welcomes the announcements by Ukraine and Russia on a temporary ceasefire, on the occupied Palestinian territories new security incidents are recorded, the United Arab Emirates has struck again, the Security Council discussed the situation in Lebanon.
Russia-Ukraine: Ceasefire
The United Nations welcomes the unilateral ceasefire announced by Ukraine, which is to take effect on the night of May 5 to 6, as well as the ceasefire announced by the Russian Federation for the period of May 8 and 9.
The UN Secretary-General, as stated by his press secretary, expects that the commitments made will be fulfilled. In this context, Antonio Guterres has once again called for a “full, immediate, unconditional, and sustainable cessation of hostilities,” which will open the way to a “just, comprehensive, and lasting peace,” in accordance with the UN Charter, international law, and all relevant UN resolutions.
Meeting of the Security Council on Lebanon
The UN Security Council held closed consultations on the implementation of resolution 1559, which, among other things, calls for the withdrawal of all foreign forces from Lebanon, as well as the dissolution and disarmament of all Lebanese and other armed formations. Deputy Secretary Rossmary DiCarlo, in her statement, noted that after the resumption of hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel in early March, 2,679 civilians died, including at least 177 children. More than 8,200 people were injured. A million Lebanese cannot return to their homes.
Violence onoccupied Palestinian territory
The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warns that last week on the occupied Palestinian territories a high number of security incidents were recorded. It is recalled that since October of last year a ceasefire regime has been in place there. In two cases, humanitarian facilities were hit by shelling. An airstrike was also carried out near a UN warehouse, and a vehicle carrying humanitarian aid was damaged as a result of stone-throwing. In accordance with international humanitarian law, all parties are obligated to facilitate, not hinder, humanitarian activities, the UN notes.
Strike on the OAE
The UN expressed deep concern in connection with the fact that on May 4 several missiles and drones were launched towards the United Arab Emirates, which, according to available data, caused injuries to three people and triggered a fire at an oil facility. Besides this incident, several strikes have been carried out in recent days on ships in the Strait of Hormuz and its surroundings.”This significantly increases the risk of the resumption of hostilities in the region against the backdrop of an increasingly fragile ceasefire regime,” the UN emphasized, calling on all parties to refrain from any actions that could lead to an escalation of tensions and undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts.
