Yerevan, May 5 /Xinhua/ — On Tuesday, the first Armenia-EU summit took place in the city of Yerevan, which was attended by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, President of the European Council Antonio Costa, and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.

Greeting the guests, N. Pashinyan noted that the Armenia-EU summit has raised bilateral relations to a qualitatively new level. As he emphasized, Armenia and the European Union have already formed a weighty common agenda, which will soon be discussed in the format of summits.

A. Koshta indicated that holding the summits of the European Political Community and the EU-Armenia in Yerevan sends a clear signal about how the European Union wishes to build relations with Armenia. According to him, the strategic partnership program between the EU and Armenia, adopted in December of last year, contributes to strengthening and expanding bilateral relations. He also reminded that the parties closely cooperate in the field of security and defense within the framework of the European Peace Facility.

U. von der Leyen stated that the European Union and Armenia are closer than ever. As he noted, the parties have achieved good results in the work on implementing the visa-free regime between the EU and Armenia, as well as ensuring an inflow of investments. The Chairwoman of the European Commission expressed confidence that the current summit will contribute to the formation of qualitatively new relations between the EU and Armenia.

At the end of the summit, a joint declaration was adopted and a number of other documents were signed, concerning, in particular, cooperation in the field of interconnectedness and on the issue of operational interaction in border management.
