Tbilisi, May 5 /Xin Hua/ — For the first time in the history of independent Georgia, a complete reconstruction of the Georgian Railway /GR/ is beginning. This was announced on Tuesday at the presentation of the “historical renewal” of the GR by the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Mariam Kvrivishvili.
According to her, a large-scale modernization of the wagon-locomotive fleet is planned for 2026-2028, including the purchase of 50 new locomotives and 1500 wagons.
“It is expected that these investments will allow reducing the transit time from 24 to 12 hours, as well as doubling the capacity of the transport system, which will strengthen Georgia’s position as one of the most efficient transit hubs in the region,” noted M. Kvrivishvili.
The minister added that, alongside the development of freight, the passenger direction is also being developed: it is planned to purchase new trains, which will allow to double the passenger flow, increase comfort and the speed of transportation in accordance with modern standards. –0–
