Washington, May 3 /Xinhua/ — U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that the United States plans to withdraw “far more” than 5,000 military personnel from Germany, which the Pentagon had previously announced for this week.
“We are going to significantly reduce the number of troops in Germany, and the reduction will be much larger than 5,000,” said D. Trump to journalists before boarding Air Force One in the southeastern American state of Florida.
On Friday, the Pentagon announced the withdrawal of about 5,000 American servicemen from Germany over the next 6-12 months.
“This decision was made based on a thorough analysis of the disposition of forces of the Ministry of Defense in Europe and taking into account the needs of the theater of military operations and the situation on the ground,” noted Pentagon representative Sean Parnell in his statement.
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) stated on Saturday that it is working with the American side to understand the reasons for such a decision against the backdrop of new tensions in relations between the USA and Germany in connection with the crisis in the Middle East.
Earlier, D. Trump hinted at the withdrawal of troops after the Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, stated that Iran “humiliates” Washington in negotiations to end the conflict.
On Thursday, the American leader stated that he could also reduce the US military presence in Spain and Italy, criticizing European allies for not helping in the American-Israeli operation against Iran.
Germany is ready for a possible reduction of American troops in the country, Foreign Minister of Germany Jonn Wadaful stated on Thursday.
According to the US Department of Defense, at the end of last year, more than 36 thousand American military personnel were deployed in Germany, as well as about 1.5 thousand reservists and over 11 thousand civilian employees.
US European and African Command headquarters are also based in Germany, and Ramstein Air Base serves as a key center for American military operations.
