Beijing, May 3 /Xin Hua/ — A representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs /MFA/ of China stated on Sunday that in connection with the growth of neo-militarism in Japan, which already represents a real threat, it becomes increasingly relevant to renew the memory of the premises, results, and principles of the Tokyo Trial.
On Sunday, the 80th anniversary of the opening of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, also known as the Tokyo Trial, will be commemorated. In China and Japan, as well as other countries of the international community, memorial events were held to once again emphasize the historical significance of this event.
A representative of the Chinese foreign affairs department stated that on May 3, 1946, in accordance with the terms of Japan’s unconditional surrender and the Charter of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, issued by the Allied occupation forces’ commander-in-chief, the Tokyo Trial began judicial prosecution.Based on numerous convincing evidences and a thorough legal foundation, this historical trial, which united the judicial authority of 11 countries, recognized Japanese militarists as guilty of igniting an aggressive war and grossly violating international law, as well as revealed countless crimes committed by Japanese aggressors in various Asian countries. 25 war criminals of class “A”, including Hideki Tojo, were sentenced to death by hanging or imprisonment.False claims such as “a judicial process that enforces the victor’s justice,” “the Japanese war as an act of self-defense,” and “legislation adopted post factum” have been decisively refuted.
The Tokyo process became the embodiment of the implementation of the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Declaration and embodied the collective will of both the victorious countries and the suffering peoples. “The goals and principles of the UN Charter were brought to life during the process, and the fruits of victory in the Second World War were protected,” he said.
An official representative stated that the adoption of the Tokyo Trial decision is an indispensable condition for Japan’s post-war return to the international community. However, after 80 years, to the discontent of the people, the specter of Japanese militarism still remains and continues to spread.Japan’s right-wing forces still try by all possible means to deny and distort the decisions of the Tokyo Trials and indisputable evidence, and even justify crimes committed during the aggressive war, including by revising history textbooks and forming among the Japanese people a distorted perception of history. That is why some Japanese officials and politicians still honor war criminals as “heroes” and visit the Yasukuni War Shrine, where convicted war criminals of class “A” are venerated.
Japan’s right-wing forces are preparing to accelerate remilitarization, deploy offensive weapons, restructure the military machine, and seek a revision of the pacifist Constitution. According to an official representative, all of this is diametrically opposed to what a “country aspiring to peace,” as Japan calls itself, should be doing.
An official representative of the UN Security Council declared that the Tokyo Trial, which became a litmus test for assessing the conscience of humanity, ensured historical justice. Along with the Nuremberg Trial, the Tokyo Trial condemned fascist war criminals to an eternal pillory. One cannot deny the historical justice established by these two great trials. Their legal authority should not be doubted. And the cornerstone they laid for the post-war international order should not be shaken.
May Zhuo, a Chinese judge at the Tokyo trial, as is known, said: “Forgetting the past sufferings can lead to catastrophes in the future.” If anyone or any force foolishly tries to overturn the verdict on aggression, they will inevitably face opposition from all peaceful people in the world and will once again be brought before the tribunal of history, added the representative of the UN Ministry.
