With the approach of May Day holidays, against the backdrop of the growing popularity in the country of tours to small towns, what new trends are being observed in the outbound and inbound tourism sector?

In one of the offices of a travel agency in the Chaoyang district of Beijing, the flow of clients seeking consultations and document processing for departures does not stop. According to the head of the agency, during the May Day holidays, traditional popular destinations such as Italy, Australia, Spain, and Portugal remain in demand, and demand for medium and long-haul foreign tourist routes continues to grow.

Li Menzhan, a public relations manager of a tourism company, noted: “For example, in Europe, in such countries as the Netherlands, Great Britain, Spain, and Portugal, there are excellent opportunities for active outdoor recreation, and moreover, now is one of the best times of the year to get acquainted with cultural attractions.”

Interest in traveling to France is growing thanks to the celebration of unique folk festivals such as the “Lily of the Valley Festival.” Switzerland, in turn, attracts tourists wishing to enjoy the nature of the Alps: the best season for active recreation has now arrived there.

Against the backdrop of the growing popularity of outbound tourism, the outbound tourism market also shows an upward trend. Data shows that during the May holidays, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen were the most sought-after cities for outbound tourism. The number of foreign tourists in Sanya and Xiamen increased by 1.1 times compared to last year, in Xi’an — by more than 70%, and in Taiyuan, Changzhou, Kunming, Yangtze, Nanning, Wuhan and other cities growth exceeded 30%.
