On April 30, 1885, the history of the State University of Management began. It was on this day that the Alexandrov Commercial College was founded — an educational institution from which the great journey of the future SUM started. Today, the university is 141 years old. This is not just an impressive date, but a whole era that includes traditions, a strong scientific school, thousands of graduates, and most importantly — people who know how to manage change.
The history of MBA has always been connected with practice. Even at the end of the 19th century, commercial education was especially important: the country needed specialists who understood economics, trade, business organization, and could work in a rapidly changing world. Later this idea grew into something bigger — into a university where management became not just a subject but the foundation of professional thinking.
Over 141 years, GUU has come a long way: from the Aleksandrov Commercial School to one of the country’s leading management universities. Names, epochs, and training formats have changed, but the purpose remained the same — to prepare people capable of making decisions, taking responsibility, and seeing development where others only see difficulties.
Today, GUU is a vibrant university with a strong character. Here, history is valued, but they do not live by the past alone. Here, they speak about the future, the digital economy, new management models, entrepreneurship, technology, and leadership. And through it all, the main thing is maintained: respect for knowledge, for the teacher, for the student, and for the cause they serve.
On the university’s birthday, special words of gratitude are expressed to the GUU leadership. For development, for attention to traditions, for the aspiration to make the university modern, open, and strong. Managing such a large organization is not easy, but precisely competent decisions help GUU preserve its name and confidently move forward.
Thank you to the teachers, staff, and everyone who puts effort into university life every day. For the lectures, projects, support, organization, care for students, and loyalty to their cause. Often, it is this daily work that remains behind the scenes, but without it there would be neither a high level of education, nor the atmosphere, nor a true university community.
And, of course, a separate place in this story is occupied by students and graduates. They continue the GUU name in companies, government structures, scientific projects, business and public life. In every decision, there is a part of that school that the university gave.
Happy Birthday, HSE! 141 years is a strong history. But even more important is that it continues. May there be new achievements, bold ideas, bright projects, and people ahead, whom the university will be proud of.
